infection…

Mel’s leg started seeping again today. I took him to the vet on emergency and they drained it and bandaged it. Before it was just fluid from him moving it around alot but this time it was infected, probably a side effect from his chemo? His vet wasn’t there so the vet on call started him on a new antibiotic and I’ll be talking to his vet tomorrow. Hopefully this will clear up quickly so we don’t have a major set back on his chemo treatment. They took a culture of the infection so we can make sure he is on appropriate antibiotics results should be in 5-7 days. I’m starting to feel like everyday there is something new….it’s getting a little overwhelming.

  1. Overwhelming is understandable for sure!!!!! Keep your spirits up for Mel…I know…tough.

I hope this passes quickly for both your sakes…

  2. Hang in there Mel. We wish these things didn’t happen. Make sure your Mom is doing stuff to boost your immune system and put good bacteria in your gut OK? There’s lots of stuff in our Forums about it. When you’re on a lot of antibiotics you need to stay strong.

Hope you heal quickly my friend. Lotsa love coming at ya.

  3. I’m sorry about the little set back… The first few weeks are such a roller coaster ride… Ups and downs… I really hope that the new antibiotics do the trick and get Mel feeling better real soon!!!

Sending you and Mel a big fat hug!!!

  4. It gets better. Its hard when you’re still dealing with the diagnosis, the surgery, having a new tripawd, treatments… and now infections?!?!?!?!?!?!? Sometimes you just want to scream or curl up in a little ball and whimper while you drown your sorrows in a pint of ice cream or some friendly adult beverage (not that I’ve ever done either one of those…right?). After 8 months I’m kinda hoping Jack gets into some mischief or has some sort of random complication just so I have something to post about! (ok, not really, but I’m just sayin that life DOES get back to normal, but after all the roller coaster of emotions and emergencies, normalcy can feel a little weird). Best wishes to Mel – he is SUCH a doll!

  5. Hi there..My Jack had a similar case where his incision actually started opening back up. The culture came back as MRSA!!!! He went on Clindamyocen (sp) for about 2 months or so before it finally cleared. It was definitely a blow from the chemo. Keep on top of it! Keep us posted

  6. Catie,
It is A LOT overwhelming-unfortunately it is sometimes the nature of what we have to deal with.

Maybe try focusing on one thing at a time for a bit. Focus on getting Mel past the infection. You need to be very cautious with infections and chemo since chemo suppresses the immune system. See what your vet says tomorrow. Obviously I am not a vet, but based on my experience this is what I would do. Once the infection clears up sufficiently you can focus on chemo again. You said in the forum that the vet was going to reduce the next chemo dose- so hopefully Mel will tolerate it better. And you know you have seen it bad, and you and Mel got through it. I know you want to get on with the chemo, but it is better if Mel is feeling as good as possible for each treatment. We had many treatment delays when Maggie’s WBC count was low.

Hang in there. Mel has shown great resiliency already in his life, he has the strength to deal with this too. And you do to- because you have to…
